What is a Blog?
So what exactly is a blog you may be asking? A blog which is short for "weblog" is an online journal or informational website displaying information posted by a blogger. It's sort of like a news feed for that particular person or thing you are following. It's a great way to post your thoughts in a well structured manner and having thousands of followers read about what is happening. The purpose is to reach as many people as possible in all walks of life and help you better connect with people you normally wouldn't.
Advantages of Blogging
Blogs are great tools but you may be wondering what are the advantages to blogging? For one, it's a great way to hone your writing skills. When you first start a blog you may be thinking or worrying at the least about making a mistake in spelling or grammar. Blogging will help you overcome that fear and help you gain motivation to improve your writing skills, so your blog is more presentable. It's also a flexible work schedule if you decide to take it up as a job. At anytime you can stop whatever you are doing and sit down and write a blog post about whatever topic you are trying to discuss. It does not matter when you do it only that you do it. However, you should try and be on a somewhat manageable schedule for your followers to keep up with you.
Disadvantages of Blogging
Though few in number there is one disadvantage I have found personally to running a blog. I use to have a Tumblr account (more on that later) but I found it a chore to constantly keep posting running on my blogs. See, with some blogging sites you can set up scheduled posts to show up at certain times. So you can plan ahead and post them when you are ready. However, keeping up became a chore for me and I found myself less and less inclined to keep up with my blog and followers. I eventually deactivated my blog and haven't looked back. I prefer social media and posting on the fly whenever I feel up to it.
What is needed to set-up a blog?
First and foremost I would suggest figuring out what your blog will be about and stick with that subject. Once you've gain a decent following you can expand your subject to something more broad. If you decide to constantly change content on a weekly basis with a brand new blog. You won't have a very good following as people will unfollow your blog and find something more to their tastes.
Second, I'd find a decent hosting site. There are many out there some cost money and others do not. Some of my favorite hosting sites are Tumblr and Blogger which I am posting this blog on. If you want to have your own site with it's own domain name you will have to pay for that. GoDaddy is a great hosting site service for a decent price. Check them out at GoDaddy.com.
Third, I'd pick a domain name that reflects what your blog will be about. If for example your blog is about flowers, try something that will instantly catch the eye anyone interesting a flower blog. "FlowersGaloreBlog.com" or anything along those lines would suffice but ultimately it is up to you.
Where to set up hosting for your blog
I've only used two blogging sites personally, Tumblr and Blogger. Tumblr is a fast and easy way to set up a blog it has huge amounts of customization and it's all free. Blogger is also free but I find the customization to be lacking. It's great for simple posting but beyond that I don't find much use for it. I prefer tumblr which allows you to post in greater detail. Examples include gif and video editing within the site itself and being able to change the structure of the page with just a few lines of code. If you are a more advanced user I definitely suggest you check out Tumblr as it's probably the best blogging site out there. You can also easily access posts from simple hashtag searches. It makes for easy blogging of what matters to you.
